AUSTRALIAN WILDLIFE JOURNEYS

If you have found this page you are probably interested in wildlife tourism. This page aims to provide some context. After many years offering immersive wild encounters on Kangaroo Island, we were keen to link up with other operators offering sustainable wildlife encounters in the wild.  The aim was to link our guests up with the key wildlife experiences across Australia.

The old-school business approach would see other tour operators as competition whereas we have seen collaboration as a strength. After researching the market, we found there was a gap in the information available to travellers, where the presentation of Australia is impossibly broad, and any detailed destination and regional information has little integration.

Looking at Australia as a whole, there are some trials in deciding where, when and how to travel to experience the extraordinary wildlife. The vast distances, climatic diversity and migration patterns all pose challenges for those wanting to design a logical travel plan.  Given so much of our wildlife is endemic – that is found in Australia and nowhere else – it holds great attraction but how can you settle on a plan? We believe we have a solution.

Exceptional Kangaroo Island is a founder member of an energetic group which has come together to provide a unique travel solution. Australian Wildlife Journeys is a collaboration of like-minded, independently owned and operated small businesses with a shared set of values. We are all passionate about raising the profile of immersive, sustainable encounters with wildlife in their natural habitat, combined with world-class hospitality.

Collectively we focus on connecting guests to the Australian environment through a series of marine and land-based experiences derived from the antiquity of our land, the diversity of the natural history which surrounds us, and the passion of the people and the communities in which we live.

We seek to provide rich information about different wildlife classes (birds, mammals, reptiles, invertebrates, fishes) and seasonal events such as breeding cycles and migratory patterns. We tell stories about the interactions between our people and the animals who live around us. In many cases, we introduce our guests to the concept of “shared space” – leaving room for nature and behaving so that we can observe natural behaviour from animals in the wild.

Australia is just one of many destinations around the world threatened by climate change impacts, extreme weather, water scarcity, and unprecedented species loss,  but we need to do our part. Sustainable tourism can meet these challenges head-on, by protecting our amazing destination at the same time as giving travellers the opportunity to actively contribute to the regeneration of local ecosystems on our tours.
